South America

Destinations

Amazon and Magdalena river journeys. Patagonia. Buenos Aires to Rio.

Where to Sail

The Galápagos

Expedition Cruising

The Galápagos

A year-round expedition with no bad season. Small ships of 16 to 100 guests, licensed naturalist guides required by the national park, and daily landings and snorkeling among marine iguanas, giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, sea lions, and hammerheads. Pair beautifully with Quito, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu.

Best Time to Sail

December to May for warmer water and calmer seas. June to November for cooler water, stronger currents, and the most active marine life.

South America

Ocean Cruising

South America

Patagonia, the Chilean fjords, the wine country of Chile and Argentina, and the colonial cities of the east coast. Often combined with Antarctica voyages from Ushuaia, or with land extensions to Buenos Aires, Iguazu, and the Atacama Desert.

When to Go

November through March for Patagonia and the southern itineraries. April and October are excellent shoulder months.

The Amazon

River Cruising

The Amazon

Expedition river cruising deep in the Peruvian or Brazilian Amazon. Skiff excursions into flooded forest, dawn birding, night walks with naturalists, and visits to remote river communities. Small purpose-built vessels with twenty to forty guests and onboard guides who change how you see a rainforest.

Best Time to Sail

High water (May to August) for wider waterway access. Low water (November to February) for beach landings and wildlife concentration.
