Prague

Prague is one of my top 5 favorite cities in the entire world. Many of the buildings and structures in the city's Old Town and historic center were built from the 11th to the 18th century. Among them are Gothic churches, Renaissance theaters, Baroque town halls, and neoclassical commercial buildings — one of the most outstanding urban ensembles in Central Europe to have survived since the Middle Ages.

River Cruising

The Danube

Europe's grand river, winding through Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, and Croatia. Itineraries often run between Budapest and Passau or Nuremberg, layering imperial cities (Vienna, Budapest), wine country (the Wachau Valley), and storybook villages (Dürnstein, Melk). The classic seven-night first-cruise itinerary.

Best Time to Sail

April to May for spring color and smaller crowds. September to October for wine harvest and golden light. Christmas Markets in late November and December are extraordinary.

River Cruising

The Rhine

The Rhine flows past castle-topped cliffs, vineyard hillsides, and timber-framed villages between Amsterdam and Basel. The Middle Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage stretch with more than 40 castles, is one of the most dramatic scenic days in all of cruising. Add a wine focus through the Rheingau and Pfalz regions.

Best Time to Sail

Mid-April through October. Tulip Time in Holland (late March to early April) and the Christmas Markets are the most-requested departures.

River Cruising

The Seine

From Paris to Normandy and back, the Seine offers the most direct route into French art, cuisine, and history. Monet's gardens at Giverny, the Norman D-Day beaches, the cathedral at Rouen, the cliffs of Étretat. A favorite for travelers who want France in deep focus rather than as a stop on a wider itinerary.

Best Time to Sail

May to June and September for ideal weather. June 6 sailings are particularly meaningful for D-Day commemorations.

River Cruising

The Douro

Portugal's Douro Valley is a landscape of terraced vineyards, port wine quintas, and golden afternoon light. Smaller ships, fewer departures, and a far more intimate experience than the bigger European rivers. Itineraries typically include Porto, the Vega de Terrón crossing into Spain, and Salamanca.

Best Time to Sail

April to June for green hillsides and wildflowers. September to October for the grape harvest, which is exceptional to witness firsthand.

Ocean Cruising

Northern Europe and the Baltic

Norwegian Fjords, the British Isles, Iceland, the Baltic capitals (Copenhagen, Stockholm, Tallinn, Helsinki). Long summer days mean late evening port calls and dramatic landscapes. Smaller ships can navigate deeper into the fjords and access ports the larger lines must skip.

When to Go

June through August for the longest daylight. Mid-September for autumn color in the fjords.

They came with a specific cruise in mind, but wanted help with all the details. Touring the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam was a must-do.
