You Won't Believe These Weird Travel Laws

You Won't Believe These Weird Travel Laws

You think you’ve got travel down to a science? Think again.

Most travelers focus on packing lists and itineraries—but it’s the small, unexpected rules that can quietly derail a trip. And sometimes, those rules are… a little strange.

From the surprising to the downright bizarre, here are a few travel laws (and cultural expectations) worth knowing before you go:

  • Singapore takes cleanliness seriously—and they mean it. Failing to flush a public toilet can result in a fine of up to $500. Littering penalties are even steeper, and chewing gum is heavily restricted. Bottom line: Be tidy, be mindful, and don’t test the system.
  • Feeding pigeons in St. Mark’s Square might feel like a travel moment… until you’re fined for it. The ban exists to protect historic buildings from damage, so while the birds may look friendly, feeding them is officially off-limits.
  • Planning to pack that camo jacket or backpack? Leave it at home. In St. Lucia (and several other Caribbean countries), camouflage attire is reserved for military use only—even for tourists.
  • Cobblestones are one thing—ancient ruins are another. At sites like the Acropolis in Athens and the Colosseum in Rome, high heels are prohibited to help preserve these historic landmarks. Plus, your ankles will thank you!
  • This one surprises people. While marijuana has been decriminalized in small amounts in Jamaica, that doesn’t mean it’s unrestricted. There are still rules around where it can be used, and public consumption can be an issue. Don’t assume—know the boundaries.
  • Cultural norms matter here. While laws have relaxed in recent years, the United Arab Emirates still leans conservative when it comes to public behavior. Public displays of affection—especially beyond something subtle—can attract unwanted attention. Best approach: Keep things respectful and low-key.
  • Yes, it’s a tropical paradise. No, that doesn’t mean anything goes. Public nudity, including topless sunbathing, is not permitted in Fiji.
  • You may have heard the rumor about “going commando” being illegal. While that’s more folklore than practical enforcement, Thailand does have high expectations around appropriate dress and public decency. When in doubt, err on the side of respectful and modest.

The reality? Travel isn’t just about where you go—it’s how you move through a place.

Knowing the nuances, the unspoken rules, and yes—even the strange ones—is part of what turns a good trip into a seamless one.

These are the kinds of details most travelers don’t think to look for—but they’re exactly what shapes how a trip feels once you’re there. I can help you with that!

Because the goal isn’t just to see the world; It’s to experience it well.
